Managing Information on Facebook

Facebook has been a phenomenal success since its break through in cyber space and some of the main reasons as to why Facebook has remained popular worldwide is for its ‘status updates’. The more friends you have on Facebook, the more News Feed you get with an endless supply for Facebook status updates, meaningless messages, Farmville updates and other nuisances. While some Facebook messages are handy and some apps useful, most of them can be quite irritating to see on your wall.

Here are some ways to help you manage the information that you receive on your wall:

Managing Facebook Friends

When you log on to your Facebook account, choose to view the ‘Most Recent’ news located at the top of your News Feed. When you scroll down, you will see two options which are Older Posts on the left and “Edit Options’ on the right. Click on “Edit Options’ and manage the friends that regularly appear on your News Feed.

By default, Facebook chooses which friends’ post it think you will most likely want to see based on how many friends are commenting on the post, who posted and what type of content it is. You can tweak this by adding the friends whose activities you would like to see more often and limiting the rest to a hide list.

Managing Facebook Applications

Some Facebook apps are useful while some are just plain culprits. If an unwanted application appears on your News Feed, just hover your cursor near the app and the ‘Hide’ button will appear. Click it and that app will be hidden. If you want to view it again, simple click ‘Top News’ on your News Feed. Scroll to the bottom and choose “Edit Options.” You’ll see which applications you’ve hidden, and can choose “Add to News Feed” to restore the hidden app.

Managing Facebook Updates

Another option that you can use in managing what you see on your News Feed is the options found in your toolbar located at the left side of your screen. Click on ‘Friends’ and a drop-down menu will appear. You can now choose to view only the status updates from your Facebook friends in your News Feed, or you can also choose the option of viewing the latest updates from specific groups of people you’ve created, such as those on your Limited Profile list.

Creating specific lists for your News Feed can be a boon and a bane. A boon as it helps you manage the many different segments of your friends list, making sure you see what only you want to see and get the right updates from friends closest to you. It is a bane as making a list can be tedious as you would need to make one for colleagues, family, and friends and so on.

Either way, if it helps, it won’t hurt much to just sit down and organize for one day and enjoying the fruits of your organizing for the many months ahead till Facebook comes up with a totally new system.
